Adult & Adolescent Psychotherapy

Good therapy is built on trust.

About me.

Since 1994, I have practiced psychotherapy in a variety of settings, including a maximum security penitentiary, an outpatient adolescent drug and alcohol program, a community mental program, a mandatory counseling program for DUI offenders, a Kaiser child and adolescent psychiatric clinic as well as several outpatient psychotherapy clinics working with adults, adolescents, children and couples. • The most important, vital aspect of any psychotherapy resides in the relationship between the therapist and the client. I strive to create an atmosphere in which every client feels open to say what he or she needs to say without fear of judgment. I aim to make clear to every client that he or she is able to disagree with me, or point out mistakes I have made, without fear of retaliation. Offering every client a safe and confidential space, I hope to facilitate the exploration and resolution of emotional problems so that each client can lead a richer, more fulfilling life.

  • As with individual psychotherapy, the most vital aspect of couples’ work is the trust established between the therapist and the couple. Both members of the couple should be able to feel their viewpoint is being respected and understood for any therapy to be productive. In couples’ therapy, I see the couple as the primary client and strive to work on the dynamics that keep each partner from feeling like they are a part of a functioning couple. I also respect how each couple has their own unique idiom, their own unique rules and boundaries, and work very hard on not imposing my values, with the exception of the presence of emotional, physical, or sexual violence.

  • As the transition between childhood and adulthood, adolescence can be a time of emotional turmoil. Some teenagers have difficulty managing the developmental challenges and will sometimes resort to acting out behaviors (e.g., drug abuse) or become uncommunicative and withdrawn. In therapy, I work to engage an adolescent client in a trusting, open relationship. I also work with parents in understanding their child’s struggle and helping them to implement more successful parenting strategies.

  • I offer supervision and consultation for students and professionals in the field. I have been supervising and working as a consultant since 2011. I work primarily through a psychoanalytic perspective. In my work, I focus on the therapeutic relationship, the unconscious enactments, the transference and countertransference, to help the therapist more deeply understand their patients’ struggles and how to help them. I don’t regard myself as an authority telling the therapist what to do, but more as an interlocutor engaged in a conversation about the therapist’s struggles.
